Adam Leventhal is FedEx / FWA European Football Writer of the Year.

The Athletic reporter won his award for outstanding work covering the aftermath of last year’s earthquake in Turkey, in which former Newcastle and Chelsea footballer Christian Atsu died.

Adam Leventhal of the Athletic is the FedEx European Football Writer of the Year for 2024 and collected his award at the Footballer of the Year dinner in London last week.

Leventhal was presented with his trophy by Kaat Vanderheyde of FedEx Express, and she also praised James Gheerbrant of the Times and Sid Lowe of the Guardian, who were both highly commended.

She said of Leventhal’s work: “His articles highlighted not just the human suffering and devastation but also the incredible resolve of the communities that had been torn apart by the disaster, and the part football played in the rebuilding process that was to follow.

“The judges described the entry as incredibly moving citing the commitment to journalism that led to some of the most impactful and important storytelling they had seen.”

Adam Leventhal said: “It is a huge honour to be up here among so many esteemed guests, journalists and football people. I’d like to thank the FWA, FedEx and my editors at the Athletic for backing me to tell this story. I’d like to thank my guide and translator Zofia, who was amazing, and also everyone who told their story to me, including the family of Christian Atsu.”
