We are all devasted at the news of Grant Wahl’s passing while covering the World Cup in Qatar.
Grant was a friend to so many FWA members and one of the most respected journalists in the world.
His passion and dedication to football was unparalleled and the insight he brought to his coverage unsurpassed.
He was a trusted colleague, a fearless reporter and a huge advocate for the game, not just in the US but globally.
He will be greatly missed and we send our condolences to his family and friends. It was a privilege for many of us to work alongside him.
The US Soccer Federation said in a statement: “The entire US Soccer family is heartbroken to learn that we have lost Grant Wahl. Here in the United States, Grant’s passion for soccer and commitment to elevating its profile across our sporting landscape played a major role in helping to drive interest in and respect for our beautiful game. As important, Grant’s belief in the power of the game to advance human rights was, and will remain, an inspiration to all.”
“He was a kind and caring person whose passion for soccer and dedication to journalism were immeasurable,” Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber said.
“This is so devastating,” twice World Cup winner Megan Rapinoe said on Twitter. “All the love to his family and loved ones.”
